Where do I find my VIN?

What does a Wrangler window sticker prove?

A used Wrangler rarely looks the way it left the factory. Owners add lifts, bigger tires, bumpers, winches and new badges. The original window sticker records what Toledo built. It lists the trim, the Quick Order Package, the engine and transmission, each option group with its price, the destination charge and the total MSRP. It also shows the EPA fuel economy and the assembly plant.

That matters most on a Wrangler because the trims share one body. A Sport, a Sahara and a Rubicon can look almost the same once the wheels and badges change. The hardware underneath is different, and so is the price new.

How do I read Wrangler trims and packages by generation?

JK (2007–2018). The JK ran for more than ten years. Its trims included Sport, Sahara and Rubicon, with many special editions on top. Its stickers use the same Quick Order Package system as later Jeeps. Dealer listings show 24S on many mid-2010s Sport models.

JL (2018 model year on). The JL went on sale as a 2018 model, alongside the last JKs. That makes the 2018 model year the one where the sticker or the decode matters most. JL trims include Sport, Sport S, Willys, Sahara and Rubicon. The Rubicon 392 arrived for 2021 with a 6.4L V8 rated at 470 hp. The 4xe plug-in hybrid went into production at Toledo in December 2020.

On a JL sticker, the Quick Order Package code ties the trim to the powertrain. Dealer listings show:

Code As listed
24R Rubicon, 3.6L V6, 8-speed automatic
23R Rubicon 4-door, 3.6L V6, 6-speed manual (2024)
22R Rubicon 4-door, 2.0L turbo, 8-speed automatic (2023)

The letter tracks the trim. The digits shift with the engine and transmission. Codes can change from one model year to the next, so treat these as examples, not a decoder.

Below the package, the sticker lists option groups and stand-alone items with prices. Typical examples are a hardtop, a towing group, an advanced safety group or a bigger touchscreen. These are the lines that make two Rubicons with the same code worth different money.

How do I check a used Wrangler is really a Rubicon?

Start with the sticker. A factory Rubicon lists the Rubicon trim and its package code. Then check the hardware against what the Rubicon came with:

  • Transfer case. The Rubicon uses the Rock-Trac system with a 4:1 low range.
  • Axles. Heavy-duty Dana 44 axles front and rear.
  • Lockers. Electronic locking differentials front and rear, with switches on the dash.
  • Sway bar. An electronic front sway-bar disconnect.

A Sport with a lift kit, Rubicon hood decals and aftermarket lockers can copy the look. It won’t match a Rubicon sticker. Lifts and big tires also aren’t on any factory sticker, so the sticker tells you what was added later. That helps when you price the Jeep and when you think about wear on the steering and driveline.

On a Rubicon 392, check that the sticker lists the 6.4L V8. On a 4xe, check that the sticker shows the plug-in hybrid powertrain, not just a 4xe badge. EPA ratings for each Wrangler powertrain are on fueleconomy.gov.

Where are the VIN and paint code on a Wrangler?

The VIN plate is on the driver’s side of the dashboard, readable through the windshield. The VIN is also on the label in the driver’s door opening, and on the title and registration.

The paint code is on that same door-opening label, next to PAINT or PNT. Wrangler codes are three characters. If the Jeep has been repainted, the door label and the sticker are your record of the factory color.

How do I get a Wrangler window sticker by VIN?

Type the Wrangler’s 17-character VIN into the box above. We run a free NHTSA decode, show the trim, count the recalls for that model and year, and check whether the original sticker is on file. You get that answer before any payment. Open recalls on that exact VIN are at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When a sticker is on file, the $9.99 Full Report adds the original sticker PDF, every option with its price, the paint code where it can be matched, and recall details. If none is on file, we say so up front.

Without a sticker, a Jeep dealer can pull the original build from the VIN. The current lineup is on jeep.com. For other Jeep models, see the Jeep window sticker page. To see what the Wrangler cost new, line by line, read original MSRP and options by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a used Wrangler is a real Rubicon?

Read the trim and Quick Order Package on the original sticker. A factory Rubicon lists the Rubicon package, and its standard equipment includes the 4:1 Rock-Trac transfer case and front and rear electronic lockers. Badges and a lift kit can be added later; the sticker can't be changed.

What does 24R mean on a Wrangler sticker?

It is a Quick Order Package code. Dealer listings show 24R on Rubicons with the 3.6L V6 and 8-speed automatic, and 22R on a 2023 Rubicon 4-door with the 2.0L turbo. The code changes with the engine and model year, so read the one on your Jeep's sticker.

Is my Wrangler a JK or a JL?

The JK covers the 2007 to 2018 model years. The JL went on sale as a 2018 model, so both were sold as 2018s. The original sticker or the free decode settles which one you have.

Does the Wrangler sticker show the paint code?

The sticker lists the paint by name. The three-character paint code is on the label in the driver's door opening, and the Full Report includes it where it can be matched.
