What do SEL, N Line and Calligraphy mean on a Hyundai?
Hyundai mostly sells equipment by trim, with a few packages layered on top. Common trim names include SE, SEL, N Line and Limited, with XRT on rugged versions of the Tucson, Santa Fe and Santa Cruz, and Calligraphy at the top of the Santa Fe and Palisade. Some trims are split further by packages (for example, a Convenience or Premium package on certain SEL models), and those only show up on the original sticker. Port-installed extras such as carpeted floor mats or cargo trays also appear there with their own price.
Electrified models add their own naming. Hybrid and plug-in versions of the Tucson and Santa Fe carry their own trim ladders, and the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 list battery and drivetrain choices that change range and price.
How are Genesis packages named?
Genesis became a separate brand from Hyundai for the 2017 model year. Its models are the G70, G80 and G90 sedans and the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs, plus electrified versions. Genesis usually names the version by engine (such as 2.5T or 3.5T) and then adds packages like Select, Advanced, Prestige or Sport depending on model and year. Because so much of a Genesis is decided by package, the original sticker is the clearest record of what a specific car has.
When we parse an original sticker, the Full Report lists standard equipment, each optional package with its price, base MSRP, destination charge, total MSRP, EPA fuel economy and the assembly plant. The build sheet guide explains how to read one.
Can I get a Hyundai or Genesis sticker by VIN?
Yes, when it’s on file. Hyundai and Genesis are covered through a licensed window-sticker data partner, and the check comes before any payment.
The free part is the NHTSA vPIC decode (year, model, trim or series, body, engine, drivetrain, fuel and assembly plant where reported) and the number of NHTSA recall campaigns for that model and year. To see open recalls on your exact Hyundai or Genesis, enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
If the original sticker is on file, it comes with the $9.99 Full Report, a one-time payment with no subscription, along with every option and package with its price, the paint code and full recall details. If not, we say so. A report without a sticker still gives full recall details, owner complaint counts and the decoded build data in one PDF with a permanent link, but no option prices or matched paint code. Coverage varies by model year and market. A sticker we show as available but can’t deliver gets you an automatic refund.
Where is the VIN on a Hyundai or Genesis?
- Base of the windshield on the driver’s side
- The certification label on the driver’s door jamb
- Title, registration and insurance card
On a used car, check that all of these match.
Where is the paint code on a Hyundai?
The VIN doesn’t carry the paint code. On the car itself, most Hyundai and Genesis models have the paint code on the label in the driver’s door jamb. Some older models put it under the hood or on the firewall. Hyundai codes are short letter-and-number combinations. More on reading them is on the paint code page.
What should you check on a used Hyundai or Genesis?
- Warranty after transfer. Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is for the original owner. Second and later owners get 5 years/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage from the original in-service date. Hyundai’s warranty page has the full terms. Genesis buyers should confirm with a Genesis retailer which coverage carries over.
- Anti-theft update. Many 2011–2022 Hyundai models with a mechanical key were targeted by thieves because they lack an engine immobilizer. Hyundai released a free software update and steering-wheel lock program, explained on its anti-theft site. Ask whether the car has had the update.
- Recalls. Use the nhtsa.gov link in your results. Hyundai and Genesis dealers do recall repairs at no charge.
- Package features. Check that features from the listed package, such as a sunroof, surround-view camera or ventilated seats, are actually there.
- Badges. An N Line or Calligraphy badge doesn’t prove the trim. Compare it with the decoded series.
Where else can you find a Hyundai or Genesis sticker?
Try these routes:
- The first owner’s paperwork, often in the glovebox or purchase folder
- The selling Hyundai dealer or Genesis retailer, which may have the deal file
- Hyundai Customer Care at 1-800-633-5151, or Genesis Customer Care at 1-844-340-9741
- The dealer listing, which often shows the sticker on late-model used cars
The free decode and recall count stay available for every VIN.
