What does a Tacoma window sticker prove?

The Tacoma holds its value well, so sellers have a reason to dress up a lower grade. The original window sticker lists the grade, cab and bed, the engine and transmission, the drive, each factory package with its price, any port- or distributor-installed accessories, the destination charge and the total MSRP. It also shows EPA fuel economy and the plant that built the truck.

On a used Tacoma, it answers three questions. Which grade is it? Which packages came from the factory? And which extras were added before the first sale?

How do I read Tacoma grades and packages by generation?

Toyota calls its trim levels grades. They changed a lot between the last two generations.

Third generation (2016–2023). Engines were a 2.7L four-cylinder or a 3.5L V6. Grades included SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited and TRD Pro. The sticker lists each package under the grade, such as premium or technology packages, with a price.

Fourth generation (2024 model year on). The new Tacoma launched with eight grades: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, Trailhunter and TRD Pro. Every version uses a 2.4L turbo four. Upper grades can have the i-FORCE MAX hybrid version of that engine. The sticker shows which one you have, and the hybrid costs more new.

The TRD PreRunner is a two-wheel-drive grade with an off-road look. Trailhunter and TRD Pro sit at the top, each with its own off-road hardware.

How do I tell a TRD Off-Road from a TRD Sport on a used Tacoma?

The two grades sit close in price and look alike from a distance. They are built for different jobs.

  • TRD Off-Road is the trail grade. It has an electronic locking rear differential. On the fourth generation it adds Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs, and an electronic front stabilizer-bar disconnect is available.
  • TRD Sport is tuned for the road. It doesn’t have the TRD Off-Road’s locking rear differential.

Decals, wheels and a lift can make a TRD Sport look like an Off-Road, or an SR5 look like either. The grade on the sticker is the factory record. Check for the rear locker switch, and match the engine to the sticker on a 2024 or later truck. EPA ratings for each Tacoma powertrain are on fueleconomy.gov.

What are port-installed accessories on a Tacoma sticker?

Some Tacoma equipment isn’t fitted on the line. Items such as floor mats, bed liners, mudguards or tonneau covers can be installed at the port of entry or by a regional distributor. They still appear on the sticker or an addendum, each with a price.

This matters when you compare two trucks. A Tacoma with a long accessory list had a higher MSRP than the same grade without one. Those parts don’t change the grade. Gulf States Toyota and Southeast Toyota often add their own packages on a separate addendum, so a truck first sold in those regions may carry more add-ons.

Where are the VIN and paint code on a Tacoma?

The VIN plate is at the lower driver’s corner of the windshield. The VIN is also on the label in the driver’s door opening.

The paint code is on the same door label, on the C/TR line. The first three characters are the paint code and the code after the slash is the interior trim. Our Toyota paint code page explains the label in more detail.

How do I get a Tacoma window sticker by VIN?

Enter the Tacoma’s 17-character VIN above. The NHTSA decode, the grade, the recall count for that model and year, and the sticker check are free. You’ll see whether a sticker is on file before paying. Open recalls for that exact VIN are at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When a sticker is on file, the $9.99 Full Report adds the sticker PDF, every package and accessory with its price, the paint code where it can be matched, and recall details. If none is on file, we say so first.

Without a sticker, a Toyota dealer can look up the original build from the VIN. The current grades are on toyota.com. For other Toyota models, see the Toyota window sticker page. To see what the Tacoma cost new, line by line, read original MSRP and options by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a TRD Off-Road from a TRD Sport?

Read the grade on the sticker. The TRD Off-Road is built for trails and has an electronic locking rear differential. The TRD Sport is tuned for the road. Decals and wheels can be swapped, but the sticker shows the grade the truck was built as.

Which Tacoma generation is mine?

The third generation covers the 2016 to 2023 model years. The fourth generation started with the 2024 model year and uses a 2.4L turbo four, including the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.

Why are there accessories on my Tacoma sticker that weren't on the build?

Some accessories are fitted at the port or by a regional distributor after the truck leaves the plant. The sticker lists them with prices, and some regions add a separate addendum.

Where was my Tacoma built?

Toyota builds the Tacoma in Baja California and Guanajuato, Mexico. The original sticker names the plant, and the free decode reports it where NHTSA has it.
