Coverage: Vehicle data sticker in the trunk or spare-wheel well on most Audis; no original-sticker source for Audi
Where the Audi paint code is
Like Volkswagen, Audi doesn’t usually put the paint code in the door jamb. It’s on the vehicle data sticker, a paper label in the trunk.
Where to look:
- The spare-wheel well. Lift the trunk floor and check the sides and floor of the well.
- Under the trunk mat or on the inside of the rear compartment.
- The service booklet. On earlier Audis a copy of the data sticker was placed in the first pages of the maintenance booklet. Check the glove box for it.
- The driver’s door jamb. One paint supplier notes that some Audi models also have a metal plate there.
No luck? An Audi dealer’s parts department can look up the factory color from your VIN.
What Audi paint codes look like
On the data sticker, Audi codes usually show up in two parts:
- A four-character code that starts with L, like LY9B.
- A short two-character code after a slash, like A2.
Suppliers note that a code like LY9B/A2 can appear on the car as LY9B, as A2 or as both. They’re the same color.
Real Audi colors and codes, as listed by touch-up paint suppliers:
| Color name | Code |
|---|---|
| Brilliant Black | LY9B / A2 |
| Ibis White | LY9C / T9 |
| Glacier White Metallic (tricoat) | LS9R / 2Y |
| Navarra Blue Metallic | LX5H / 2D |
These are examples. Confirm your own code before ordering.
LY9B, A2 or Daytonagrau: which Audi code does the supplier need?
- German and English names. Audi colors often carry a German factory name as well as the US name. One supplier lists code LZ7S as both Daytona Gray Pearl and “Daytonagrau”. A search by name can miss the right paint or turn up the wrong one.
- One color, two codes. Because a color can show up as LY9B, A2 or LY9B/A2, two Brilliant Black cars can show different codes and still be the same paint.
- White isn’t one color. Ibis White (LY9C) is a solid white, while Glacier White Metallic (LS9R) is a tricoat. A bottle of “Audi white” won’t fix both.
- Same code style as Volkswagen. Audi and VW both use L-prefixed codes, so make sure your supplier has Audi selected as the make.
Is the Audi paint code in the VIN?
No, the color lives on the data sticker and in Audi’s build record, which a dealer can reach with the VIN (why the VIN doesn’t contain the paint code).
What StickerByVIN can and can’t do for an Audi
We name factory colors by reading them off original window stickers, and we don’t have an original-sticker source for Audi. So we can’t give you the color from the VIN alone, and we won’t guess one.
Free for every Audi VIN:
- The NHTSA decode: year, model, trim, body, engine, drivetrain and plant where reported.
- The count of NHTSA recall campaigns for that make, model and year, with a link to check open recalls for your exact VIN.
- The location guide above, so you can read the code straight off the sticker.
For the original window sticker, ask the selling dealer, check your purchase paperwork or contact Audi customer care with the VIN. See Audi window sticker for more.
How do I touch up Glacier White or Navarra Blue on an Audi?
- Match the code, not the name. Give the supplier the L-code, the short code or both, exactly as printed.
- Use a tricoat kit for Glacier White. LS9R has a base, a pearl mid-coat and a clear. A single color won’t match.
- Clearcoat for metallics. Navarra Blue Metallic and other metallics look flat without clear over the color.
- Test on a hidden spot, like the inside of the trunk lid, and let it dry before judging.
- Photograph the data sticker while it’s readable. It’s paper, and it lives in the trunk.
