What a Jeep build sheet gives you
Jeep belongs to Stellantis (formerly FCA US), alongside Ram, Dodge and Chrysler. We get original Jeep window stickers through a licensed window-sticker data partner, not from Jeep directly.
Free, for every Jeep: the NHTSA vPIC decode. That covers year, model, trim and series where reported, body style, engine, drivetrain, fuel type and assembly plant. You also get the number of NHTSA recall campaigns for that model and year, with a link to nhtsa.gov to check your exact VIN. This is labeled “decoded data, not the original sticker”.
With the original sticker: before you pay, we run a free check to see if a sticker is on file for that exact VIN. If it is, the $9.99 Full Report includes it, and we parse it into a build sheet: standard equipment, each package with its original price, base price, destination charge, total price, EPA MPG and assembly plant. If none is on file, we say so first. The report can still give the Jeep’s decoded build data, full recall details and owner complaint counts, in one PDF with a permanent link. It won’t have option prices or a matched paint code.
Jeep trims to know
The trim is the biggest factor in a Jeep’s value, and badges are easy to swap. These are the main trim names you’ll see on recent models. Lineups change by model year, so trust the sticker for a specific vehicle.
Wrangler
- Sport is the entry trim.
- Sport S adds comfort and convenience features over the Sport.
- Willys adds off-road styling and equipment to the lower trims.
- Sahara is the more comfort-focused, road-oriented trim.
- Rubicon is the dedicated off-road trim.
On a real 2020 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon sticker, the standard equipment list includes “4:1 Rock-Trac Heavy-Duty Part-Time 4WD System”, “Tru-Lok Front and Rear Axles” and “Front Disconnecting Stabilizer Bar”. If a “Rubicon” doesn’t have that hardware, it isn’t a Rubicon.
Grand Cherokee
Trims include Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit and Trailhawk. Trailhawk is the off-road-focused version. Summit sits at the top of the range. NHTSA’s decode doesn’t always separate these clearly, which is one reason the sticker is worth checking.
What do Jeep package codes like 28Y mean?
Jeep stickers list options in plain English, with the contents of each package indented beneath its name and the price on the right. Packages are called groups or packages. Examples from real Wrangler stickers:
| Sticker line | What it means |
|---|---|
| Customer Preferred Package 28Y | A coded package that bundles other groups; on one 2020 Rubicon it included the Recon Package, LED Lighting Group and Steel Bumper Group |
| Cold Weather Group | On one 2020 Rubicon: heated steering wheel, heated front seats and remote start |
| Technology Group | Another named group; read the indented lines beneath it for what it includes in that model year |
| Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group | Receiver hitch, wiring harness, auxiliary switches and a heavier battery on that sticker |
| Safety Group | On that sticker: rear park assist and blind-spot detection |
Group contents and prices change from year to year. On one 2020 Rubicon sticker the Cold Weather Group was $995. Other model years show different prices, so don’t use one sticker to price another.
A few other details on Jeep stickers are worth reading:
- Exterior color is listed by name, and premium paints appear as a priced option (that 2020 Rubicon listed “Granite Crystal Metallic Clear-Coat Exterior Paint” at $195).
- Top type matters on a Wrangler. Hard tops, soft tops and their colors are listed, so check that the top on the vehicle matches.
- Engine and transmission are listed separately, sometimes with a package saving shown.
- Assembly point is printed near the VIN. Wranglers are built in Toledo, Ohio.
Where the Jeep paint code is
The VIN does not contain the paint code. On most modern Jeeps, the paint code is on the label in the driver’s door jamb, next to the word “PAINT”. Jeep codes usually start with “P” and are three characters long. Older Jeeps may have the code elsewhere, such as under the hood on the radiator support or under the driver’s seat on some older Wranglers. Our paint code page explains how color names on the sticker relate to the code.
Where to find the VIN on a Jeep
- On the dashboard, at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side
- On the label in the driver’s door jamb
- On the title, registration and insurance card
Checking a used Jeep against its build sheet
- Confirm the trim on the sticker matches the badges and the hardware.
- Look for the expensive groups the seller mentions, by name.
- Check the top and wheels, which are often swapped on Wranglers.
- Compare total price with the asking price to see whether the claimed equipment adds up.
For other Stellantis brands, see Mopar build sheet, Ram and Dodge. The Jeep sticker itself is covered on our Jeep window sticker page.
