What does a Mustang window sticker prove?
Mustang value lives in the details. A GT and a GT Premium look close from the outside. A Performance Package car and a base car can wear the same wheels after a swap. The original window sticker settles it. It names the body style and trim, lists the equipment group, and prints the engine, the transmission and every factory option with its price. The price block shows base price, options, destination and the total MSRP.
For enthusiasts, the gearbox and the axle are the lines to read. They decide how the car drives, and they are easy to misstate in a listing.
How do you read Mustang trims and equipment groups?
The current Mustang is the seventh generation, known as S650. It arrived for the 2024 model year and is built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan. It comes as a fastback or a convertible. The sixth generation started with the 2015 model year.
The S650 trim ladder runs:
| Trim | Engine | Equipment groups |
|---|---|---|
| EcoBoost | 2.3L turbo four | 100A, 101A |
| EcoBoost Premium | 2.3L turbo four | 200A, 201A |
| GT | 5.0L Coyote V8 | 300A, 301A |
| GT Premium | 5.0L Coyote V8 | 400A, 401A |
| Dark Horse | 5.0L Coyote V8 | 600A, 700A |
From EcoBoost to GT Premium, the group ending in 0 is the base and the group ending in 1 is the upgrade. The Dark Horse uses 600A and 700A. A GT with 301A has more equipment than one with 300A, and the sticker prints the group’s price. Ford can change codes and contents between model years, so read the group on your car’s own sticker.
Which engine, gearbox and axle should it have?
- EcoBoost: 2.3L turbo four, rated at 315 hp. 10-speed automatic only.
- GT: 5.0L Coyote V8, rated at 480 hp, or 486 hp with the active exhaust. 10-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual.
- Dark Horse: 5.0L Coyote V8, rated at 500 hp. 10-speed automatic or a Tremec 6-speed manual.
The Performance Package changes the final drive. On an automatic EcoBoost or GT, it moves the axle from 3.15 to 3.55. On a manual GT, it moves from 3.55 to 3.73. Cars with the package also get a handbrake-style electronic parking brake lever. If a seller claims the package, the sticker should list it with its price.
What should you check on a used Mustang?
- Trim and group. Match the badges to the trim line and the equipment group code. Premium trims add interior and tech equipment.
- Engine and gearbox. A manual EcoBoost S650 would not match what Ford offered. Check the transmission line on the sticker.
- Performance Package. Look for it by name. Aftermarket wheels and brakes don’t make a car a Performance Package car.
- Paint. The color name is on the sticker. Look for the two-character paint code after “EXT PNT” on the driver door-jamb label. See our Ford paint code page.
- Recalls. For open recalls on this exact Mustang, use nhtsa.gov/recalls. Our free check shows how many campaigns there are, and the Full Report explains each one.
The sticker also carries the EPA fuel economy label. To compare engines and gearboxes, fueleconomy.gov lists each Mustang configuration.
How do I get a Mustang sticker by VIN?
Enter the 17-character VIN above. The free check covers the NHTSA decode, trim and recall count. It also shows whether Ford has released this Mustang’s original sticker. The $9.99 Full Report adds the Mustang’s sticker PDF, each option with its price, the paint code where we can match it, and recall details.
Mustang stickers come from Ford’s own system, so Ford decides which VINs are released. Recent model years have the best coverage, and we can’t promise every car. Our Ford window sticker page explains what to do if yours isn’t released yet. To see how options add up to the total, read MSRP by VIN.
